The Style of Hip Hop Fashion

90s hip hop fashion trends really stand out among other fashion styles. While in the 90s many new fashion trends arose, hip hop fashion truly stands out as one of its own even though at the time it seemed like the only people who wore it were teenagers. Hip hop fashion is made up of a lot of different elements. The most important element of it is that it represents street life with an edge. This can be both good and bad, since there are elements of it that can be very empowering and positive while others can be very degrading and harmful. As a culture, we need to be able to recognize the bad parts of this art form and work to counteract them where we can without diminishing the positive aspects.

A big part of 90s hip-hop fashion trends is that a lot of women wore clothing that was either worn by a black person or was emblazoned with some sort of tribal design. One of the primary reasons for this trend is that African Americans was often seen as being less stylish than Caucasians and therefore would wear clothing that highlighted their differences. The most famous example of this would be the “Chipless” pants worn by members of rap group Insane Clown Posse. “Chipless” was actually a term invented by the singer Mos Def and his wife Chaka Khan, who used it to describe their pants. The pants were so popular amongst their fans that they would tour the country wearing them and there have been several movies about them ever since.

Another aspect of the 90s hip hop fashions is the use of accessories. Ties, jewelry and hair accessories are worn widely. In particular urban style celebrities like Beyonce Knowles and Solange Knowles, wore a lot of jewelry, especially during the time when hip-hop fashion was at its most fashionable. This was partly because they were wearing their hair longer, which was considered unisex in that decade, but it was also because many of their fans could not afford to buy expensive jewelry. Other notable urban styles of hip hop include Juicy Couture and Jean Paul Gaultier. There are also more generic urban fashion fashions from places like Japan and even Russia.
